On Santa Rosa Island, one of the Channel Islands just 65 kilometers from Santa Barbara, nearly 20 sites have been found that reveal signs of prehistoric human activity, from massive middens of abalone shells to distinctive stone points and tool-making debris. Torben Rick of the Smithsonian Institution, who led the survey that uncovered the sites. The discovery adds hefty new data to the already mounting evidence that maritime Paleoindians — also known as Paleocoastal peoples — lived along the California coast at the end of the last ice age. Modern members of the Chumash, who have inhabited the Channel Islands for thousands of years, re-create a crossing to the islands in a tomol canoe. Uncovering hard evidence of this coastal migration has proved challenging, however, because the shorelines that Paleocoastal people would have followed have long since been submerged by rising seas. It was while studying some of these sites on San Miguel Island — another of the Channel Islands — that Rick and his colleagues made a key observation: They noted that Paleocoastal settlements tended to have certain traits in common that made them more suitable than sites right on the water. Optimal locations were also near sources of useful raw materials, like chert for making tools, as well as fresh water and rockshelters or caves for refuge. Distinctive crescent-shaped stone tools, like this from neighboring San Miguel Island, are among the Paleocoastal artifacts that have been identified. Upon surveying the area, the team found 19 sites that showed signs of human occupation, mostly middens, or piles of detritus left over from generations of tool making and food preparation.

They played a factor in forming the terrain since the Biblical territory of Bashan, the now famous Golan Heights, was formed by extinct volcanoes. But for our purposes we are interested in volcanoes for what they can possibly tell us about the age of the earth.

No trip to this tropical paradise was complete without chalking up some black crunchy lava under your boots. With a 60 Minutes crew in tow, we hiked for what seemed an eternity. There was however the odd hint that the fires of hell were never far beneath. Short sharp shots of heat would blast up through the cracks. And then a hole in the lava would reveal the furnace below. But still, I never felt terribly anxious.
Then just three months ago, Kilauea let out an almighty blast. The goddess of Pele, as the islanders know her, let rip. And this time when I returned I saw what could only be described as a disaster zone. Whole suburbs of homes had been demolished. Trees were scorched for miles and millions of small volcanic rocks, shrapnel, covered the ground. It really did remind me of Chernobyl and the aftermath.

The Hawaiian Petroglyph Primer was published. What we do know, he said, through both scientific carbon dating and distinctive carving styles, is the progression of more and more sophisticated art forms, the earliest being linear stick-man drawings, which then moved to a brief period of block-like, wide-bodied forms. Both of these styles, Kwaiatkowski says, are found used by ancient cultures worldwide. Respected cultural leader and kahu shepherd or minister Danny Akaka says each of the drawings found here are significant in their own way.
Many of these areas of dense concentration, such as the Waikoloa field, are theme specific, he says. There was a downside, however. If the remnant was missing, it was thought to have been taken by a rat considered a thief by Hawaiians , and the characteristics of that unsavory character were absorbed instead. Today, docents are at the Waikoloa field site daily from about 7 a. Some Viewing Tips and Warnings: The angle of the sun at these times best accentuates the carvings, making for better viewing and photography.
Take care to tread lightly around the fields and do not step on the petroglyphs. Rubbings and castings of the rock carvings are strictly forbidden.
